PJM is looking into carbon-neutral production by 2025

We remain steadfast in our commitment to advancing sustainability initiatives across our production and future endeavors. We have experienced remarkable growth in the automation market and in November, we finished the expansion of both factory and office spaces. However, we recognize that with this growth comes a heightened responsibility towards sustainability.

In line with our dedication to sustainability and green energy, we proudly welcomed Søren Hald to our team on November 1st, taking on the position of Sustainability & Quality Manager at PJM. Søren brings a wealth of expertise, garnered from a career marked by a relentless pursuit of quality across diverse sectors, including defense.

Given the increased sustainability demands from our customers and the emergence of new regulations from both the government and EU, it's imperative to have someone fully dedicated to these critical areas. As Søren aptly points out, the concept of sustainability can lose its clarity if not continuously monitored and informed by the latest initiatives and reports in the field.

A primary objective for Søren is to spearhead PJM's ambitious aim of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025 at our Faarevejle operations. We are well on our way, having already implemented numerous sustainability initiatives, leaving us a mere 10% away from our target (Scope 1 and 2 only).

Closing in on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s third and final scope

At PJM, we adhere to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol's three scopes.

1

The first scope focuses on our direct emissions, encompassing mobile and stationary fuel usage, emissions from industrial processes as well as those from vehicles and stationary engines operated by the company itself.

2

In the second scope, we reviewed the indirect emissions from energy purchases such as electricity, heating, and cooling systems with gas and steam.

3

We have successfully executed the first two scopes and are steadily progressing toward the completion of the third and final scope. While these areas lie beyond PJM’s direct control, it is within our capability to influence them through conscious decision-making. Our approach revolves around implementing a systematic framework to measure, track, and reduce emissions across our supplier chain.

Søren Hald emphasizes the significance of inspiring our suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices like our own.

“At PJM, it’s imperative for us to foster a mindset among our suppliers that encourages sustainable thinking and production.”

Reduce plastic. Support your local community

We are always looking into new ways to pursue new sustainability initiatives, and one area we would like to improve is enhancing waste sorting practices. Plastic waste is a global issue. We recognize the environmental impact of plastics and are committed to finding ways to reuse them effectively. Hard plastics can be granulated for reuse, while PU and PPU plastics can undergo extraction processes to recover oils. This not only aligns with our commitment to sustainability but also has the potential to significantly reduce our CO2 footprint.

In our efforts to minimize transportation and support our local community, we are exploring local options for the reuse of plastic. By keeping the process local, we aim to reduce emissions associated with transportation. Additionally, supporting local businesses and communities is an added benefit of this approach.

A diver with a professional and personal commitment

When Søren isn't guiding PJM's sustainable initiatives, he swaps his office attire for a wetsuit, immersing himself in diving adventures. As a diver, he has experienced the impact of plastics in the ocean and highlights the dangers of getting caught in discarded fishing nets. Therefore, reducing plastic waste is not just of professional interest but also a personal commitment for Søren.

We are very excited about having Søren Hald leading us toward a more sustainable future at PJM, as we enter the third and final scope of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
